How often should a dog be bathed?

The are many factors that come into play when deciding how often a dog should be bathed, for example odour, amount dirt on the dog’s coat as well as any skin conditions the dog may have. Working dogs are likely to need more bathing that pet dogs who spend most of their time indoors. If the dog owner is concerned with the dogs smell then it is recommended to bath the dog once a month, where as if this is not a concern for the dog owner, as long as the fur is not visibly dirty or there are any health issues which may require more frequent bathing then just a few times a year is seen as adequate. There are other factors that come in to play such as size of the dog, breed, length and thickness of the dog’s fur, types of activity the dog takes part in. It is important to be aware that bathing a dog too frequently because can cause skin irritations, in particular if the skin has not been dried correctly.

What shampoo should I use to bath my dog?

There are many types of shampoo on the market, the type you choose depends on many factors. Sensitive skin will require a softer shampoo such as a puppy or natural shampoo. A rich moisturising shampoo would be recommended for dry coats whereas oily coats would want a deep cleaning or astringent shampoo. Dogs which have particularly bad odour would benefit from shampoo with a good distinctive fragrance. Detangling shampoos are often used for working dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Why is it important to dry the dog correctly?

Drying the dog is as important as the actual bathing itself, if not done correctly the dog can be left with skin irritation which can cause further health issues.
